Upper Endoscopic Dilatation & Stenting

Endoscopic dilatation and stenting has now become the standard treatment for many conditions of the GI tract. Endoscopic dilatation is particularly useful in benign strictures or stenosis of the esophagus and stomach. The procedure is safe and effective and can be repeated. Some examples where dilatation is the standard treatment include achalasia, post-operative anastomotic strictures, and inflammatory strictures. Endoscopic stenting has allowed a much safer alternative to surgery for the palliative care of cancer of esophagus and stomach. Many different types of stents become available recently to tackle stenosis caused by tumors at different locations. Sometimes stents can also be applied to benign conditions such as post-operative anastomotic leakage.
